Hello all, today I finally got my Hapax, and I find it very intuitive to use, however, the main reason I got it is that I wanted to record patterns from banks saved on my external instruments. What is the easiest way to achieve this? Do I need to set up the tracks on the Hapax to receive MIDI outgoing data? Thank you for reading my plea, and I hope life is good for you
do your instruments send midi? what instruments?
I own a Roland JD-Xi, an Aira TB-303 and a Tr8, currently connected to an MX1 via USB ports, they send MIDI off course
I managed to work around this by making the instrument I wanted to record as the main input/midi clock starter/ but this requires that I change the outlet from out to in every time I want to record a pattern, hopefully, there is a way to avoid this
What does he midimonitor tell you? 2nd + red button
You would need to connect their 5-pin midi outputs to the Hapax midi inputs to be able to record their notes. The MX-1 doesn’t pass midi from the usb ports through over usb to the Hapax
The screen is not showing any MIDI notation during the recording process; the input and output are set to the correct MIDI channel, and I can play the instrument, but not recording midi notes from the bank of the external instrument
midi is connected directly to the hapax on A,B,C and D which was changed to trough, I wouldn’t be able to play notes from the instruments if it werent so, as I mentioned I can play and record on the hapax but cannot get notes from the instruments themselves unless I change them to in on the hapax and set the instrument as master clock. Sorry for the confusion
Offcourse I know that; the midi jacks are connected to the hapax the mx1 is just handling just the audio, The hapax is the master clock and i can play the instruments and record them on the hapax but hapax isn’t getting notes from the banks while they are playing
And the cable works? Can you switch the input and output and verify the behavior is the same? MIDI cables do break. Nothing funky in settings, like midi thru at the wrong places, unsure if that matters?
If you can record from a keyboard with the same cable at port a, most obvious to me is that your device that you initially wanted to record from is not sending any midi.
Can you provide a sketch of your setup with how cables are connected and to what inputs/outputs?
midi in a or b from the output of what you want to record. the rest will be setting up midi output and clock from jdxi. then in hapax, setting sync in to whatever midi jack your jdxi output is plugged into. you must save the configuration before you turn hapax off
check out that search above. a lot of the time, google ai can answer questinos like this. not all the time tho! sometimes its wrong but for questions that have been discussed a lot, ai can find answers that make it kinda easy to be honest.
so find out if there is a setting to turn on or otherwise configure in the jdxi midi menu or the system menu, whatever it has. maybe post back here what sort of menu choices you have on the jdxi
Midi cables are working, as I mentioned, I can play and record on the Hapax just fine, midi cables are set on their corresponding midi channel output and input, but I can only record midi patterns from banks of external instruments when the left input on the hapax In A is connected with the instrument midi out and the external instrument is set as the master clock which then allows recording from the instrument, To my understanding the hapax should recieve outgoing midi notes from the external instrument when set to out as this setup is my default. Perhaps the project settings for MIDI through on the hapax needs to be corrected?
The Aira gear and the JD Xi are connected via usb midi to mx1 to provide audio while the three instruments are connected via midi cable to the hapax midi out on ports A,B,C, The insruments are set as secondary and the Hapax as the primary midi clock, should the hapax allow to record midi notes from the external instrument when set to midi out is my question?
I can record midi notes just fine when the instrument is set to in and out on the hapax, however this requires that I need to change back and forth a lot of times, Im sure there is a way to set the hapax to recieve midi notes from external instruments when set to out as the track settings designate an output input port?
im way confused
I am really confused as well, perhaps rephrasing the question? Keep it as one question, not several interlocked?
My external instruments are connected to the OUT port on Hapax, thus preventing me from recording MIDI patterns from them and their banks. I can only send MIDI notes to them. Can this only be fixed by plugging them into the IN output, as this would require me to purchase a MIDI split unit?
do your instruments have a midi in AND midi out jack? midi output from jdxi goes to the midi input on hapax. also midi out on hapax goes back to midi in on jdxi. voila should be good except for maybe some settings! if you want to record midi from hapax to daw but its only going to a hardware synth over 5 pin din, put midi fx ‘output’ to ‘usb device’/channel and it will send that tracks output to both 5 pin and your daw. kind of convenient if you ask me!
