Not sure which question you are asking about, but if I’m jamming with my Hapax and BB, I can arm record to start on beat one of the bar, synced with my hapax, and record however many bars of guitar I set it for, and it will loop perfectly. If you set it correctly, it will automatically play your loop as soon as the set amount of beats is up, just like a midi synced looper. On top of that you could copy you guitar track to another pad, set it to slicer and chop it up and play your slices with a keyboard or sequencer. Pretty fun.
I like the blackbox because the sound quality is so good, and it is super simple. Very easy to use as a simple sample playback machine, sequenced with the Hapax, with many cc controllable parameters. It’s also very easy to find a sound you like on a hardware synth, multi sample it, then use the same synth to do something else in the song.
Piggybacking on the Blackbox, I use a 1010music Tangerine for that purpose and love it. Ground buzz can be an issue if you’re using the USB Host on the Hapax for powering/midi the Tangerine, depending on the rest of the signal flow and powering of other devices, but as mentioned in another post, there are ways around that. Can’t beat the form factor, sound quality and does essentially all the sampling/looping I need.
it cant handle even small fluctuations in tempo when it comes to elasticized audio clips. its much better at being master.
why do you need it to be a tempo slave?
To record guitar “clip style” in tempo with the Hapax. The recording has to be triggered with the Hapax playback for me to record guitar parts in time with the sequencing.
I think the blackbox and tangerine are essentialy the most usefull. Can’t beat the form factor indeed.
The MPC would be nice because it’s GUI is so handy and u get extra synths, but I can’t get anyone to confirm the workflow regarding working as a slave machine.
But yeah, the tangerine’s form factor is unbeatable.
I might have to go for the blackbox though because of the multiple outputs
i fail to see that sync one way or the other will make recording happen the way you want or not. hapax syncs right up to a stable source in my experience. you just dont want to edit a sample? i have no idea how the looper works in force but apparently there is one. there are also 4 cv outs that would work as clock to keep hapax in time which also works well between reaper and hapax. theres no reason it wouldnt work for the force.
Also, the black box total sample per project went from 80 to 576, so besides 8 drum tracks there is still tons of space for other poly instruments.
thats a nice number of samples. maybe a simpler interface. i dont regret owning the force. its a decent mixing environment with capable processes that can take the mix beyond the basic. and it has some interesting pathways that are unique to it. it can send midi over ethernet. also can have up to 32 i/o but you need to buy a sound device for that. it can be a high ender if you got em. im not mad at force but its got its quirks too.
I never got an audio interface to play well with the force, and i tried the class compliant ones folks say they had success with like the behringerumc and the tascam model 12.
Dropouts unfortunately. It’s a shame because the kind of processing chains you could do in force for live sets would make a live set so polished if it would work correctly.
There is an alteenative os, that fixes some alsa settings so it works better with some class compliant stuff, maybe worth trying it out if you still have that mixer.
i didnt have problems with my UMC
Lil update for whoever cares. I’ve managed to get Loopy Pro to work with Hapax. Looks quite promising.
USB 3.0 powered bank from Thomann which takes both a USB from the soundcard and from the USB device port from the Hapax.
Clock seems to be stable, no problem at first notice.
The only thing I’m looking for right now is a decent soundcard with a minimum of 3 outputs. Guitar left, bass right, vocal 3rd output.
My Behringer UMC404HD does not work. The lights power on but it’s not recognized.
My focusrite Scarlett Solo does work although I did have to unplug and replug it every other time because my guitar didn’t record annymore.
My Roland Tri-Capture does not work. No lights, not recognized.
If anyone has any recomendation for a soundcard, please let me know. Initially I wanted something with midi input but since the USB cable from the Hapax works so well, it’s not that important annymore.
I had an iRig HD2 laying around. That did the trick for now.
Still looking for suggestions. Need 4 outputs btw.
maybe something like this?
i’ve been using the motu m4, which has 4 outputs, but i just upgraded to the motu ultralite mk5, which has 10 outputs and 8 inputs. I got it because I’m now routing all my outboard gear into my iPad and using a novation launch control xl as a mixer control with Loopy Pro.
oooops!
