Hi all. I am having a similar issue to what’s described here in an old Hapax thread. I am having fun with Bitwig controlling my Hermod+, and thus all my Eurorack gear, but I’m running into this issue where C1 on all my other equipment is understood as C3 by the Hermod+.
It’s not the end of the world, but it would be nice to not have to add a Scale effect to every track, and instead have a “global octave offset” or something.
hi everyone, i have the same or similar problem with my hermod plus. i have connected my ableton to midi in on hermod+ midi track1. incoming c5 note is a c7 in hermod+. using scale effect seems to have no effect here. when i connect a usb controller and send a c5 it becomes also a c7. using scale effect -2 is working here. but not for the incoming ableton midi.
I think it’s maybe a labeling issue. It’s the same note; just different labels.
Proposal: fix it in Bitwig. Make a Note FX preset (Note Transpose +24) called “Hermod+ offset,” save it, drag it onto any new track bound for Hermod+.
I’ve run into this too, quite a few times; I usually don’t mind offsetting notes either on Hermod or wherever that specific Midi is coming from.
!! But in some cases, that makes you run out of MIDI range, so that basslines below C2 get chopped because for hermod C2 looks like a C0. And everything below that is just played as C0…
a lot of Eurorack patches don’t care which octave name the note has, only the V/oct that comes out of Hermod+. If your bassline sounds right coming out of the module, the “C0 looks like C2” labeling is cosmetic.
File a feature request with Squarp. A global INPUT TRANSPOSE in SETTINGS is the obvious missing piece. Hapax has the same gap per that old thread linked above, so it’s a known shape of complaint.
The MIDI standard itself is the villain here — there’s no agreement on whether MIDI 60 is C3, C4, or C5, and Squarp picked C5 while most DAWs picked C3.
It is true that eurorack doesn’t care about the name of the note and that there is no obligation to have Midi 60 to be a specific C . But for me, a part of Hermod+ is to be a module that create a bridge between Keyboard, Daw, what ever Midi interface you want and the Eurorack world . So I find strange to pick C5 as reference for MIDI 60 when almost none of those tools use this for reference. The most standard being C3 and C4 .
It’s true that if you’re not using any of this tools and stay in an only eurorack setup it doesn’t really matter . But I use keyboard and daw all the time and this is not great . The best in my opinion, would be to have the option to be able to choose which Octave you want the MIDI 60 to be reference to in the setup .
