Hi , Anyone know if its possible to launch a hapax pattern via midi cc or other from another controler or other?
Or the opposite way around … i saw someone running a sequence [different device] .
And
They had a pattern / track playing that also sent a cc message to another sequencer to tell it to start playing an audio loop… quite a cool way of doing things.
Yeah it really depends on the external device. For instance: the MC-707 can respond to program changes to change clips. This way you can make it stop (empty clip) or start any of its 16 clips for any of its 8 tracks.
I do hope Hapax will be able to send start/stop to the outputs individually in a future update, so you can use that to make an external drum machine or synth with its own sequencer start/stop, triggered by the Hapax and in sync with the other tracks.
one thing you can do – is set up a reset / trigger gate - from the CV/gate outs (or via midi to CV) on a per pattern / track basis – that will tell an external sequencer when to play or stop as you want.
i have done this many times via the MPC or even via daw to a eurorack pattern based seqeunce or drum sequencer -
it works well because you can then sequence the the reset/gate(clock trig) pattern on time lines etc i guess this wouldnt be any differnt via hapax - and controll via pattern lauch / mutes or sections
I bought a hapax based mainly on the strength of endorsement from people whose opinions I respect. I am not typically interested in step sequencers but Hapax seems to be kind of a hybrid. there is a type of sequencer operation that was common in hardware sequencers of the recent past but it seems not to exist in many, or any current HW sequencers. It is the idea of a “phrase” being triggered either to run freely after being triggered, or to start and stop when the key is depressed. Korg called this RPRR, Kurzweil I think called it Riffs, Roland MC boxes like the 909 had the ability to trigger any pattern in the sequencer this way using the Real Time Pattern triggering system with several different playback option for the triggers.
This is not an exhaustive list but it is instructive. Is this kind of feature one that the developers might be open to? Its a bit weird that my workstations which people tend to be snobby about have more fully featured sequencers than modern dedicated sequencers which have no other function. Not a dig at any particular sequencer, its just a strange situation across the entire market, in my opinion.
this goes further if you look at the ability of previous (recent, though) generations of boring old workstations like the Roland FA06 and the Yamaha Motif to import SMF into an arpeggio. if you only tried to copy the arp and pattern sequencer of the Motif XF alone, and put it in a dedicated box, you would be essentially recreating something very valuable which has been lost. sorry to rant, but I am always having to resort to these legacy sequencers attached to very heavy keyboards because the features of moderns sequencers rarely stack up. I think I might just return my Hapax. Not sure how this turned from a question into such a statement but I get pretty frustrated when I look at what has been squandered in specs and features just in the MC909 alone, not to mention all the other ones.
