Hi @Gamahachaa - this is cool… I have an RX5 (but no Pyramid…not yet…)

If you don’t mind an RX5 question…

Is it possible to externally sequence a single sample chromatically?

Also, do you know if the rX5 offers any MIDI control over jobs, such as the edit function? It’d be cool to mangle up the samples via a sequence…I’m guessing you can’t though…

Pete

Hi Pete,

I will try if multivoice is available with midi notes tomorrow. I am afraid 8f something is doable it would be via sysex though gioglong yield nothing. I am searching on this topic will let you know if found. (you can’t record sysex with the pyramid)

Here’s the MIDI implementation page from the RX5 manual. I’m not good with MIDI. It’s a bit over my head, but maybe it means something to you.

With the RX5, to sequence a sample chromatically, you have to enable PICTH mode of the “Note number assign” (MIDI job 04). You can assign up 16 sample (anyone available internal, cartridge or copied) to the 16 midi channels (make sure to enable each channel in job 02) from the 36-96 range of note (little less than 3 octaves)!

Controlling the RX5 voice parameters from the Pyramid i am afraid is not possible. Maybe something can be done with Sysex but I found no resource googling. There is though circuit bending and clock hacking (for overall pitch) which requires soldering if you are into LoFi.

Thanks for checking into it @Gamahachaa. That’s a shame, isn’t it? How cool would it be to set up and play the samples chromatically all via MIDI!

Although I suppose as you’re jamming through sequences on the Pyramid, you could manually select MIDIjob04 on the RX5, then trigger a prepared chromatic sequence from the Pyramid. That should work, shouldn’t it?

Yes that works. You cannot have both world at the same time : either drum mode or multitimbral sample player. Manually jumping from one state to the other is instantaneous. It is a drum machine not a full sampler, still you can play 16 sample on 3 octaves and many more functionalities :smirk:

Actually you CAN have both worlds! If you midi sync the Patterns or songs and play the NOTES with the pyramid and the RX5 in pitch mode. In one track you can record program changes to change the chromatic samples for each channel on every single of the pyramid’s steps while your pattern play’s the beat in sync.

I’m not sure I understand …so you’re sending PC’s and MIDI notes for both the melody and the drum hits simultaneously? Wouldn’t that confuse the RX5?

I guess I was thinking I’d send a melody to the top row of buttons set up chromatically, while sequencing drums on the bottom row.

What I tried is :

  • Rythm = RX5 patterns midi synched
  • Melody = Pyramid on several channels to RX5 + Program change to change the samples in each channel (expl Slap bass doing a melody but swaping between thumb and pick depending on the notes).
A program change is a simple midi event, not much more data than a note-on, so I will try (for the sake of it, though this would be tedious programing …). I haven’t try exiting the pitch mode to play the upper row chromatically and the bottom as drum kit (will do too ;).
