Will the Hapax work with Akai LPD8 MIDI Drum Pads as a midi controller?

Hi, I’m looking at getting the small but mighty Akai LPD8 Midi drum pad but it only has a USB midi. I know the Hapax can take USB midi controllers easier. But I wanted to have the 8 pads on the akai corresponding with the Hapax sections of drum mode. Is this possible?

I hook up my vintage drum machines to the midi out on the Hapax and instead of playing live in drum mode with the Hapax pads, I’d like to use the velocity sensitivity the akai has (just for drums only). I guess my main question is, just like in drum mode, is there a way I can I assign the kick, snare, tom to the the actual pads on the akai controller? There’s no real menu options on the akai since this isn’t a full on groove box. Thanks.

I don’t see how you would not be able to.

The LPD8 seems to be a class-compliant USB MIDI device, so it should be recognized by Hapax without a problem.

Then to match the LPD8 pads to the drum lanes of Hapax, there either option:

  • Change the notes sent by the LPD8 using the editor
  • Change the notes each drum lane expects on Hapax
