USB MIDI, DAWless, help!

 It’s pretty easy as been explained if you want to connect more than one USB devices to the Bomebox you need more ports, and for that use a USB HUB.

Bomebox->USB HUB->ALL USB MIDI DEVICES.

The mio series will require a computer to do the routing and filtering, but one done you can switch presets with a touch of a button and no computer needed.

Been using Translater pro for control surfaces and I’m not a big fan of their UI, it’s a powerful software if you need it, but it takes some time to get used to.

In that regard i very much prefer the routing and filtering of the mio series.

Hey @Fotopaul

So we don’t get all Bome heavy here, and since you have a Mio, can you attach a USB Hub for routing of USB MIDI devices on it? If so, do you know if that is specific to the MioXL only or is it available on their 4x4 device? I’m fairly sure it’s not on their 2x2.

Also, anyone else reading this thread, it would be great if anyone piped up with alternatives for USB MIDI routing. This is an exciting topic

Well, I was actually flow charting the usb midi more than the power… in my usage cases, I will be powering my bomebox through wall wart… which would provide power to usb hub… and then on to the pyramid… that usb connection is clearly labeled power… and the other usb port is the only one that will accept the plug end that usb hubs accept.

@CreepyPants
The new mio series consist of XM and XL their older models i have no experience with, the XM accepts a USB up to a total of 8 ports i believe. The XL does not support a hub, but it already has 10 ports available.

I’v had the XM for a couple of weeks but upgraded to the XL since i needed more ports, mio series also supports rtpMIDI.

The routing for USB devices only are dead easy, since you simply choose destinations for every device, of course you can do advanced filtering etc. but i doubt that will be need for this setup, and given the pyramid is quite capable on it’s own.

Sorry for the thread hijack, i shouldn’t do it, I know. But I’m a nerd. heh

You can power the BomeBox from a powered hub, also.

My Box is powered by the same USB Hub it uses for data - just DON"T use one of those quick charging hubs.

Regardless - (and this bit isn’t thread hijacking I think) - your flowchart was correct with data in mind. But it gets confusing when things aren’t necessary connected in series.

personally I don’t think about it because if I do, then I need to drink. Heavily.

Ah, your second diagram makes sense, it wasn’t obvious before – so like this:

Still, the Pyramid needs to be powered from the hub and finding a compatible hub and cable connection in that regard seems tricky (to me, at least).

A powered USB is recommended if you plan in using more than one “passive” device, in your case i assume it’s only the pyramid that needs power, in that case you should probably be good using a non powered hub.

Thanks for that info, @Fotopaul!

This is very good to know and makes my future purchase even easier.

YAAASSSSS!

Bingo!

And there’s only one pair DIN In/Out on the BomeBox, so if you need more you can actually plug in a class compliant USB MIDI interface, such as a Roland UM-One, or a MIDISport, or even a Mio - as long as they’re class compliant. (Leaves out MOTU stuff, I think)

Nope… but I’ve got a lot of research ahead and behind me… eventually, the bomebox will be my dawless set ups nervous system, with the pyramid as the brain, and MF twister, and 3D as the hands… so right after I purchased the pyramid I purchased a powered usb hub.

Still haven’t found a good option that is Multi TT and not 70 bucks… but I imagine I eventually will have to shell out for Electron’s overbridge certified definitely multi TT usb hub.

Now that we have a viable routing diagram (at least one), can anyone chime in as to which specific USB hub product would be compatible here? Like I said above in the OP, connecting the POW-R BAR USB 3.0 Type B to the Pyramid with this adapter didn’t seem to work, the Pyramid wouldn’t power on at all.

Any proven USB hub with this sort of setup would help a great deal!

EDIT: meant hub not host.

EDIT 2: Disregard that – I forgot that the USB 3.0 Type B port (port dedicated to the USB Host / Computer) goes to the BomeBox – not the Pyramid. Pyramid gets plugged into one of the four USB device ports.

Yeesh!

Well… I think most usb midi stuff doesn’t actually need 3.0…

Not that it applies to your case… but I’m powering my pyramid and also using its usb midi through a non Multi TT usb 2.0 hub and it’s powered just fine.

As for powered, and proven… Like I said above… Electron’s overbridge hub is probably one of the very few that has Multi TT as a selling point and is powered. If anything should absolutely work for these scenarios… it’s that… It’s also $70 for a usb hub.

I’m currently using this one:

But I’ve used a variety of them over the years (has it been years already?!?).

Be prepared for more of this emotion…?

Thanks, yeah I read up on that a bit, a lot of people claiming it has a poor build quality. I think the POW-R bar will actually work fine, since I was using the wrong port before (see edit #2 in above post).

ugh… hadn’t heard that… sigh that’s really unfortunate… I bought a “plugable” brand hub and it’s been working so far… no power dropouts whatsoever and it’s powering the pyramid, an x1 mk2 and two midi fighters… It’s been very nice.

Yeah, I was actually really interested in it, but the reviews put me off – and the fact that I can’t even order one from Elektron. I wonder if the quality issues caused them to stop making them?

And for anyone wondering why I chose to go with the POW-R Bar power strip + USB hub, it’s because it guarantees no ground loop issues. Or at least, I better not experience any ground loop noise issues now, or else I’ll flip my lid.

Regarding USB Hub’s:

MTT is certainly preferable, and most quality hubs are MTT these day’s.

Thing is you won’t get a good quality USB hub for cheap, 70 USD isn’t much for a quality USB hub with a quality PSU. I have used a lot of them and learned the hard way. The brands that I can recommend are Anker, Orico, ICY BOX all built to last and been reliable with at least 1-2 years track record to date.

I also have the latest Elektron Overhub for my Elektron boxes (which is available both from Elektron and dealers), which is built nicely but comes without PSU and I would have liked to see a more secure connection on the HUB itself, like a USB-B standard connector.

So using the Overhub for live performances plugging/unplugging is probably not ideal due to the USB-B Micro connection (like the ones you find on hard drives)

For my use as it’s taped under a desk it performance without any issues, as it’s sole purpose is for Overbridge 2.0
