Tips for controlling VST synths via DAWs

DAWS I use - Ableton and Logic.

I have been controlling U-HE Diva with the Hapax connected via the USB port and today I used Ableton.I send it notes and that works great.

But I want to modulate all kind of things, so I dove into the automation mode and saw CC’s that I could map. I saw tons of different destinations, so I chose CC80 - delay. I was thinking it would be a delay throw. But when I messed with it’s grid on the hapax, nothing happened. So I opened DIVA, hit the gear and I clicked on the filter knob. Immediately that knob was now being controlled by Hapax. So this is pretty great.

My questions - do the CCs in Hapax matter or do I just choose a random one as a modifier and then click and map to the synth - is this the best practice? And then as a followup, does that mean making instrument definitions for the DAW synths and plugins are a waste of time, or would I go about this a different way in ableton, maybe enclosing Diva in a group and adding macros, then mapping those and then making an instrument definition for the hapax, that I can quickly load up?

I always struggle with saving mappings with softsynths, it was a pain even with the Push3 and 3rd party synths. So I would be interested in any advice you all have. It’s far faster and more enjoyable to tweak automation on the hapax, plus have those macro knobs and LFOS..etc. I feel like I am just scratching the surface, but any help is appreciated.

i personally love modulation on hapax. if i use it with a plugin in live, i do it how you described and save the set which saves the mappings. in order to assign them youll need to mute all other cc modulation on that midi buss.

a tip: for note commands to plugins dont forget to dial in the latency compensation in the amount that roughly equals your total latency so all midi elements line up! i love this about hapax, it really makes all elements feel super tight. im unsure if compensation effects the cc/nrpn/cv output.

How did you manage to assign the Diva filter know to Hapax? did you use the assign section in Hapax?

I am not sure I did it right though, haha. For example, I have CC80 delay mapped to a filter. So I think I need to understand if it is pulling those labeled CCs from the plugin, or if they are labled on hapax as defaults. Because I am not sure which CC’s to choose to map, or maybe it doesn’t matter.

@JPM63 I used the assign section Hapax and then in Diva I clicked the gear where it highlights parameters. I made a quick automation on the grid, hit play and selected the filter knob and it mapped to it. I think the way to go in Ableton may be to make macro knobs and map to those, I am really not 100% sure of how people do it.

thank you and will try this.

from, my limited understanding as well, having just gotten the machine myself and I more just wanted confirmation on this as to if i understood it or not, but the hapax leaves its so that you can assign each cc value 0-126 independently per track, but my technical knowledge is so limited i barely know more than “1 is filter cutoff, 1 is resonance etc.” Like just what sounds good to me, but i would guess anything i could creatively imagine.
