Small Self-contained setups for the Hapax

We are all aware that the Hapax can thrive as a the brain for a studio, controlling quite a bit of gear from one place, but what about smaller setups? It always felt like overkill to me to use one or two pieces with it, but in my more DAW-hybrid setup, I’ve decided to delegate the sequencing to bitwig and use the hapax in a smaller “on the go” setup.

I’m curious if anyone has settled on any kind of DAWless, portable setup revolving around the hapax. My current plan is a 4-piece setup. Hapax controlling a Walorf M (multi mode) and a DSI tempest, the inputs of these are being fed into an octatrack to act as mixer and effects, and any sampling duties, although I’ve considered switching that out for a rack w/ some rackmounted fx and mixer.

I’d love to eventually figure out how to fit eveything into some kind of rack or flight case or pedal board, so I would be extra curious to see anyone’s setups that have achieved something like that.

What smaller setups have worked for you?

I spent several years with a 23kg case; mpc live, MI shruthi, 2 x micromonsta, fx pedals and a mixer. It was a great set up aside from the weight, but it was all patched all the time and ready for a show in less than 5 minutes.

This year, wanting to go to something easier to fly with, the hapax made the most sense for sequencing and I love writing with it. I’ve got a small euroack set up for drums/bass/synths/mixer. So a 10kg shoulder bag is everything I need. Its not perfect but its way more portable. Also I was very lucky to be able to afford this approach.

if you check out the STOOR pink Noise playlist ( https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdDKU0GDr0C_Yq9R0KHxjjbUBdf3hFlRd) theres a lot of live sets and the Hapax crops up often!

Party on.

or ipad pro. so much good stuff on ipad!

oh wait were you talking about using the m8 as a sound module? Never considered that. Actually used to own one but only used it on it’s own. Ipad is a great idea, I’ve never gotten into the ios ecosystem but I bet I could create a nice little ensemble of stuff

yes i use my m8 headless as 8 mono synths/samplers etc and is pretty amazing complete with pc and cc.

ipad however is potentially way more advanced with capability of class compliant multichannel audio device, synth models are many, extreme quality, and inexpensive! also pc/cc automatable

oh and m8 headless should only set you back less than $150 with handheld host. of course you need a host. my host is my goofy windows eurorack module. i have one with a perfect size screen for m8

ipad is the more handsome self contained unit with screen. m8 headless is the extremely capable minimum size unit but is more of a novelty if you dont have the retail version. but it is more punk, no doubt!

my current setup for live work is Hapax + EssenceFM, MegaFM, & opsix. relatively small, though i have a number of effects & an interface as well, but Hapax is just controlling those instruments.

The 3.6 update Akai MPC and Force fixes a long-standing MIDI bug that prevented using it as a multi-timbral instrument (midi note off bug). Now with the bug fixed you can have at least 8 plugin tracks as well as keygroups, samples and audio tracks and the new-gen hardware starting with the Live III is much more powerful (32 plugin tracks, 16 audio tracks).

It’s bulky but the workflow is much smoother than an iPad setup.

I’ve definitely tried to make a custom setup with the hapax+ipad that I could have in my lap, but I need to make a custom case to hold the ipad and hapax firmly in relation to each other.

Hapax and iPad, using AUM with virtual instruments and drum machines. Can also insert Koala Sampler to a Mic feed inside of AUM for audio takes that you can trigger via Hapax.
