I think there’s a misunderstanding caused by not agreeing on terms.
I’ll use the terms that we use internally:
The OLED display, or screen looks like this:
The display has a scratch-resistant glass layer on top of the bare OLED panel.
The factory screen protectors look like this:
The screen protectors are shipped with a thin film layer on top, which we leave during assembly and shipping, to avoid any accumulation of dust and micro-scratches on the screen assembly.
I think what @rv0 tried to get across is that the actual OLED display is already protected by the factory screen protector, while @maxhodges wants to keep the overall assembly pristine, including the screen protectors.
For information we do sell spare parts, screen protectors is one of them (as @maxhodges noted, they are currently priced at 10€), replacement OLED displays is another. So changing the screen protector on your unit is an option.
But I get it, there’s no guarantee on the availability of these spare parts, what happens if you need them in 10 or 20 years?
For that reason, going for an off-the-shelf protector on top of the factory one is a safe and simple bet.
In terms of dimensions, here’s the spec we provide to our supplier:
