Record free midi

Hello together,

this is my first post here. I am planning to get a Hapax because I wanna jam with my midi synths and drum machines without using the computer.
I am really more of a “player” kind of person and want to grab the ideas that I play on a midi keyboard as intuitively as possible. Editing individual steps is not my primary task tbh.
So I would like the following question to see if the device is capable of what I really need:
Can I record midi clips in a free way? Meaning: I don’t want to pre determine the length of it, just record as long as I am inspired and then have it played back, like in a looper. And do this with consecutive tracks as well?
These are things that I hate for example in the Elektron sequencers, because I need to stay within the pattern or track length that I just setup before recording.
In Ableton I can record unquantized and free in pattern length and this is exactly what I would need.
Another question: Is it possible to replace the notes within an already recorded clip by simply recording “over” it?
Anyway, the Hapax looks really appealing to me. But there is little material on Youtube focussing on stuff like I mentioned…
Looking forward to hearing/reading your feedback.
Best,
L

i think so (though i have not used it that way myself). but also ultimately even looping in Live mode for an undetermined measure will still ultimately result in a single Pattern for a given Track

LOOPER OFF 1 BAR 1/16
This option provides a way to capture your performances as if you were using a looper pedal. The length of your track is not predefined, and will be determined by the final length of your recording. The looper is only available on an empty track (no notes and automation).
First, Press rec O to start recording a loop.
Press rec O a second time to stop recording. The track length will now be set, and the track will start to loop.

New! 1 BAR will set the pattern length to the closest bar while 1/16 will set the pattern length to the closest sixteenth note.

Tip When recording with auto-loop, press the live-looped-track button to set the track length while keeping REC enabled.
