I am interested in Rample for a few reasons, but would mainly like a solution to play backing tracks. How does Rample recognize the tempo of recordings? Any suggestions on how to use / trigger Rample to play backing tracks in sync with external synths?

It does not recognize tempo.
You’ll need to correctly sequence your synth and rample to be in sync.
For more advance uses, we’ve heard of some clever users actually record an automated BPM clock pulse as audio, and play that in Rample to sync all other devices. It works nicely thanks to Rample’s DC coupling.
