Well, it seems a little deception: I read a user review saying there is P-Locks in Hapax. In reality not. Just editing some parameters like uTime.
But it’s not possible for example to change an enveloppe parameter for just one note ?
I tried with automation, it works but it is not as practical as a direct P-locks by holding a note and changing an enveloppe parameter
Also maybe people should consider about doing a midi 2.0 that includes P-Locks for machines that can use it (like Elektron) with just a similar message as a CC but like PL as they’re really nice !
my guess is it wont go in that direction. if you work with it, you get used to it. if it were p-locks you wouldnt have any visual indication what is changed, on a timeline. not every method of doing it this way will be 100% perfect, and squarp has chosen their own method. its baked in pretty deeply imo and i would bet it doesnt change. it would seem to be more logical that this be a reality on a device that has sequencer and sound engine together. so just keep both around! keep your p-locks on the gear that has them, and do longer sweeps or curved automation on hapax, because the other p-lock devices cant do those!

That’s a bit what I thought in a first time to better work with automations from a controller but sometime for some specific things P-Locks on enveloppes are much better
For example to make a sequence with resonnant sounds like pwiit, wiit, szwiit then it’s nearly impossible by hand as too precise. And automation would need switching from tons of parameters while P-locks on enveloppes are much better
But for this few cases I can still try to put notes on Hapax and the locks on Elektron in sync.
I’m someone mad against Elektron not understanding why it’s missing the very basic setting of uTime for a whole track, selecting multiple notes (hand free), zooming on sequence and setting loop points to be perfect for me and not need anything else aside (except maybe the midi delay, and midi lfos but this is less essentials)
im always changing parameters per step, its just done in a different way. youll get used to it! i did and its probably me favorite sequencer ever! i love the lfos, envelopes, shaper, automation lanes, they all work together well. my sequences can sound very animated
I did request they add something like this. They seemed thankful for my detailed request/explanation. No idea if it’ll ever make it in!
The voice samples sequence starting since the beggining is a clear exemple I think of what you can do (and then remix) in 5 minutes with P.locks while it is just impossible with automation
1st I place notes, then changing the sample used on different steps
Then I will eventually shift some step in micro timing and I need to select non successive notes (impossible with Hapax) and at the same time also the sample start offset
Then in most cases I will retry other samples/sample start or in some cases also filters, etc…
With automations if I moove or copy notes they will not be anymore wih the good informations
Also if I shift a note to hit a little before the step as the peak of the voice is not direct then the sample start info from automation will arrive too late. I will need to zoom on automation to set it somewhere else. But if later I change the note it could be wrong with automation.
I think you see what I mean
I think P-Locks are inherently difficult over MIDI. The only real option will be MIDI 2.0 where you can send an event with a note and control changes bundled together. It will be a long time before we see MIDI 2.0 in Hapax, especially since there is so little hardware and software to integrate with and they have no shortage of other requests to work through.
I’ve been thinking about it. For internal parameters (like midi FX) no PB. And it would be a lot already
For midi, then just needs to have a default value on automation lane, then if automation is empty, P. locks sends the midi CC during the duration of the note, and at Note Off sends the default value, or actual automation value
At least 3 or 4 P.locks parameters as it is like a must for some specific things like the voice samples sequence I send
yeah p locks are a privilege of having the sequencer in the same system as the sound source. midi can emulate it but it will never be the exact same thing as an elektron. if you just get used to the automation curve style of achieving a very close analog, youll appreciate Hapax’ distinctions. it is not the same workflow its true.
Yep that’s not the fault of Hapax but people who answered me on groups before buying
It’s been said to me there is P.locks, songs automation and possibilty to loop a part of the song and also a groove edit like on RM1x and there is none of that
At least if I could then record the sequence with P.locks by midi but only notes are recorded. So I should keep my sequences on Elektron and either build also a song on it (nightmare) or search to know how to trigger them from Hapax.
But the real problem being that I have to keep the Elektron nearby me and because of my electrosensitivity I should have the less possbile electrical tools too close. (it’s already making a major change with my new set up I can play hours long without trouble, while 1 or 2 hours was already a drama before)
To get back on subject some CC informations being associated with a note that you can moove or copy for things like sample slot, sample start, etc… is now something I can’t do without since I used it !!!
For other things like filters evolution I was doing bad work using it too much with P.locks
