Note values changing on their own in step mode

In Step Mode, after I assign a note value to each pad, I press play. As the sequence is playing, if I mute and unmute various steps, the note values change. Sometimes the note value is reset to the same note for all 8 pads. I am new to Hermod. It is possible I am doing something to cause this, but I do not know what that would be. The Hermod has firmware 1.71 installed. Any advice would be appreciated.

You are not muting steps, but deleting them, then re-adding new steps. These new steps all take the note value from the edit menu at the right of the window.
