Midi message format question

I am using my Hapax with a poly 2 for midi to cv ((have a Hermod on the way to check that out too). The Poly 2 has custom programmable cv’s out where a midi cc message is translated into a trigger.

I have been trying to this to work for days, but nothing. I tried directly from the pads of the hapax, with a keyboard, a seaboard,… I checked channels, midi cc messages. Midi monitor showed everything checked out, but the poly 2 custom cv didn’t react or work.

Then I got my midi fighter classic out and tried with that. And suddenly it work. I checked the midi monitor for the note. When I play the same note on Hapax, nothing. When I play it on midi fighter, succes.

I attachted a picture from midi monitor. First two lines is hapax. Next four is Midi Fighter.

Only difference I see is that midi fighter sends first CH CC NUMBER VELOCITY & hapax sends CH ON/OFF NUMBER VELOCITY.

I can even record the midi fighter notes. But in step mode, when I remove them, they are still playing.

Does anybody now or can explain what is going on and if hapax can send this CH CC NUMBER VELOCITY message instead of the ON/OFF?

Detailled midi message from Midi Fighter

Hi @Kobeats

I’m not entirely sure what the underlying issue is, as I’m not too familiar with the Polyend Poly 2, but I assume it does have to do with the timing of the events.

How are you generating the CC in Hapax ? Are you manually programming it ? Using Keytracking in the Modmatrix? Maybe Using ENV to generate some movement?

Hi @Thibault_Squarp

Thanks for the reply. If I generate a cc on hapax by pushing a pad in drum mode, then hapax sends the message, but the poly 2 does not recognize it for some reason.

Keyboards that send the same cc to hapax and to poly 2 also do not work.

If I generate the same cc l by pushing the corresponding Midi Fighter (connected to hapax) button , then it goes into hapax and out to poly 2 and poly 2 does recognize it.

It seems Midi Fighter also sends a foot control message, together with note on/of message, and that this is recognized by poly 2.

Strange thing is that I can record the incoming midi from Midi Fighter in the steps mode. Then if I delete it afterwards so the grid is empty, hapax is still sending the (foot control) message and poly 2 still receives it.

I will also reach out to Polyend, because I feel it has more to do with Poly 2 than with Hapax.

Pressing a button on Hapax (or a key on any midi keyboard) doesn’t generate CC but a note on/off event. I think maybe you can have Hapax generate a CC message from a note via Midi effects. Is there no other way to configure the Poly?

Thanks for the explanation! That is probably it; Going to check if hapax can do this.

Poly 2 also has a notes and channel mode, both with a maximum of 8 voices but then those 8 voices all become gate/cv pairs, so you lose 4 customizable CV’s. For the maximum amounts of outputs (for drums for example) best you can do is 4 voices (gate/cv) en then use the 12 customizable cv’s as triggers.

Ok. With the effects I can generate a cc message but it is for the whole channel, not per note I believe, so it triggers all the drums.

But I think Poly 2 is overkill just for triggers, so I stopped trying to get it to work for that. I am going to buy a Erica midi to trigger module and use the Poly 2 for polyphonic tracks. Or sell it since I also just got a Hermod and that works too and has midi effects. Choices.
