Hi all,
Completely new here. Received my Hapax yesterday.
I have a MIDI keyboard from Native Instruments. When I connect the keyboard to the USB-A port, the Hapax doesn’t seem to receive MIDI notes.
Can I use USB for that, or should I switch to DIN MIDI IN?
The USB-A port (USB Host) is absolutely for connecting a USB midi controller, so it will work!
Have you selected “USB Host” as the input to the track you want? If you hold down the number corresponding to the track you want to receive the MIDI input, you’ll see some input and output settings on the left screen. You can use the bottom-left knob on the set of four to the right to select the input. If you select “USB Host” there, then (for example) go to ‘live’ mode, you should see it working when you play notes on your controller.
You should also see a “USB Host Attached” message on the right hand screen when you plug in your keyboard. If you don’t, I suppose it could be that your keyboard isn’t getting enough power from the Hapax?
Ensure you have the latest NI firmware as well, and sometimes there is an option to send over USB or DIN – make sure that it’s set to USB (depending on the controller). I have a cheap Nektar LX connected to USB host and it’s working fine (without external power) however it’s a very low power keyboard (no display, etc.).
