Midi connections with Elektrons

I have the 3 Elektron Digi boxes and currently they are midi’d together (using midi thru) with a single midi input coming from a T-1 sequencer and going into the Syntakt midi in. I’ve just bought a Hapax (awaiting delivery) and my question is, should I use all 3 midi outs of the Hapax individually to each Digi box or just use one midi out on the Hapax and keep the Digi’s midi chained together? Is there any difference / advantage / disadvantage in the two methods?

MIDI splitter box? (I use the Erica Synths 1 to 8 Thru and it’s fine for DIN cabling)

If that’s all you have, I would use 3 separate connections from the Hapax. The advantage is you can address each track on an individual poly track if you want and have 48 channels to choose from if you want.

I use the Elektron’s own sequencers so I have them all chained together and only send clock and program changes from Hapax. OK, it’s slightly more complicated. I route a Keystep through Hapax and each Elektron box has the auto channel on a different Midi channel so if I want to I can play the active track from Hapax or the Keystep.

Ah cool that sounds perfect.
@polynil your reply just popped up as I was writing this. Seems we have a similar setup…

The only other bit of kit I have is a Keystep37 and I’d like this to control whichever track I’m currently working with on the Hapax. I had to get a midi merge device to use the Keystep alongside the T-1 but had to manually change the midi channel on the Keystep which was a bit of a pain in the arse. I’m hoping I wont need to do this with the Hapax…?

I have everything configured in such a way that I never have to change channels on the keystep. Just select the active track on Hapax and it will take care of the routing = send incoming notes to the correct output and midi channel.
