I’m new abd could use some help getting up and running with the Hapax

Hello, my name is Jeff and I’m on day one with the Hapax. My goal is to produce music on hardware only, without a computer screen. My current setup includes a Hapax, Roland TR8s, Abstrakt Avalon, Access Virus A, Moog Minitaur, Roland Jp8000, Empress Echosystem, and Virus TI coming soon, and MPC one coming soon for sampling. Host keyboard is Arturia Keylab.

I have a basic understanding of midi master/ slave/ cc numbers, but when it comes to getting everything to play nice with the Hapax Im struggling. I can get the synths to play/ record with the Keylab. I can use the TR8s as the master and the Hapax as the slave, but Id rather have the Hapax control everything. When I set the Hapax as the master the midi is all over the place.

I am trying to wrap my head around what an instrument definition file is and how to get the Hapax to take it. So far Ive had no luck with copy/ paste into text edit.

I would be grateful for any advice on how to get everything up and running smoothly so I can start discovering a workflow. Until then, I’ll be staring at a screen trying to wrap my head around what I got myself into.

well good thing there are lots of threads here and a manual to search! if you have one question at a time it would be easier to answer. i assume you saw somebody using hapax and you wanted to be like them? get similar results? what were you doing before hapax? you have a lot of gear. what do you mean midi is all over the place? how do you have all of it hooked up? do you envision yourself programming the brilliant sequences or are you trying to get hapax to do the brilliant part? music on a screen is uninspiring? why is that? if you use it right, any tool can help express inspiration. inspiration should not come from the tool you use! it should flow from your inner sanctuary like a jedi and the force!

I would suggest that instead of jumping all in and trying to get all of these pieces of gear working as a single integration from the get go, that you take a bit of time with just the Hapax, and maybe one other piece of gear until you catch onto the workflow.
If you MIDI is “all over the place” Maybe you are sending clock from more than one source at a time?
Any one piece of gear, assuming it receives regular MIDI clock should have no timing issues at all when connected to the Hapax.
Search the forum.. Read the online manual.. Ask specific questions.. Explain clearly how you have everything connected..
Something that works well for me is loading my pdf manuals into NotebookLM by google, then searching content from there.
Good luck!

Solipsvs,

My intention of this post is more of an intro to the forum. Hi I’m here and I’m going to be poking around looking for solutions for what I’m creating. I’ve been a drummer for most of my life, so I understand inspiration flowing from my inner sanctuary like a jedi and the force. Once I get past the hurdle of setup and get everything to play nice with eachother, I will be able to let it flow. I’ve. been using ableton live for a while now, but using the mouse and staring at the screen makes me feel like Im at work. I’m used to playing instruments, which is why I’m switching to hardware based music production. The ultimate goal is to be able to program sequences, put together rough projects to manipulate live. The only part of the process that I envision using a computer on would be to do a post mix after the creative process runs its course. I don’t expect the gear to do the creative part if that’s what your asking.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely ask specific questions after I’ve spent more time with the gear and spend more time on the forum. This is more of a Hi, this is what I’m doing here post.

well awesome! youre not alone here. we all meet for group hugs once a month. we always have room for one more!. but seriously, people have been asking questions very similar to yours here for a while so youll find what youre searching for.
