How to step through steps in step mode?

I have been through a lot of documentation and videos but i cannot find how to step through the steps (having them play) in a track when in step mode. I thought the arrow keys would be for this but i cannot see how. Can someone tell me how?

Basic fundamental function of a step sequencer

There should be a way to step forward and backwards one step at a time through a pattern playing all the notes on a step each time you step.

Kind of where step sequencers got their name from.

This allows rapid checking and editing of individual notes and chords and drums on each step.

Shouldn’t have to make a change and then play from start of the pattern or loop each time to check a change.

I understand now. I’m sure you can achieve this in a round about sort of way.

You’ll probably need to use the CV in as a way of stepping through the sequence. It might be expecting a clock so I cant say for sure how it steps through them but thats a start.

i would also give a look at the track menu page. You can make the sequence ping pong or play steps completely randomly. You can set each track/pattern where it wont loop and needs to be retriggered.

you might have success making each pattern a step in the sequence and devise a way to scroll through them in the order you like.

Some interesting ideas indeed. Currently im using the small loops method. But you’d go mad moving the loop around for little edits here and there.

I suppose i will make a feature request.

But im sure the Devs must have already considered this? I mean they’ve even implemented the unusual sh101 style “buffer” step sequencing. but not the tb303 sequencer rudimentary step forward/1 back function?

I did start looking at other hardware sequencers and shockingly the three main similar competitors to hapax also do not have individual step transport with playing/editing. Interestingly though, one tier down and many of the smaller hardware sequencers do have this feature. But obviously have limited tracks or editing so meh.
Anyway…..

would be nice to have. I think of the hapax as more of modeled after a piano roll than a step sequencer. But if they are really doing that, they should have better transport control and scrubbing, etc.

Im not shocked that it isnt implemented on hapax. All 4 eurorack specific sequencers I have, have the ability to change direction via cv. I imagine making “direction” being a mod parameter on hapax would help a ton. If you want my honest opinion on how to do this without buying a eurorack sequencer that provides it, its using the global transpose on channel 16 to “write” the various direction changes you hear. A sequencer provides a gate that at best has an adjustable pulse width, a note within a scale, and maybe another value per step for other sequenced parameters. To ask if the sequencer can go back and forth between the steps is basically asking can i play the 3 aforementioned things at any time. If you want a consistent gate length and mod value id use channel 16 to transpose the notes in whatever order you’d want that matches the random series of direction changes you’re considering. If you want every step in the sequence to have different gate lengths and mod values per step, as well as note changes, than using patterns as I previously suggested or even a combo of channel 16 transposition and patterns is the way to go. I want to hear more about what your trying to achieve because changing directions on a sequencer is a cool idea but you might be clinging to a workflow instead of a result. Maybe i am?

I do agree that it would have been nice if the SH-101 style “buffer” step sequencer was implemented directly into the sequencer without having to apply etc.

But to be fair: I don’t think Hapax is marketed as a “step sequencer” as it is way more complex than that.

I believe this could be simple addition (from the UI standpoint).

We have LEFT, RIGHT plus 1-16 buttons for looping.
We could use UP, DOWN plus 1-16 buttons for step preview.

Possibly something like UP respecting thing such as micro-timing, gate lengths etc., while DOWN would just NOTE ON the notes and keep them on as long as the 1-16 is held.
