There already are quite a number of requests centered on being able to control various Hapax features and parameters either via MIDI from an external or internal source, probably via the ModMatrix. The main problem is the small number of destinations, especially internal Hapax parameters. A few destinations I’d love to see:
- Note parameters: Microtime, Chance, Roll, with the destination being a track, or a track and a row (very useful for drum tracks)
- Chord and Chord Modifiers, to be applied to the destination track live
- Transport controls: especially useful if the Hapax is used to sequence gear located more than 1-2 meters away. Currently, start/stop/rec can only be controlled remotely via a footswitch with a cable, instead of a simple portable controller via WiDi. I can use an app on my phone to control my DAW from anywhere in my studio and if MIDI transport control was possible on the Hapax, it’d be super easy to do that too.
- Track mute/solo/toggle: easy to implement via CCs on a single channel: 3 CCs per track x 32 tracks means 96 CCs
- Pattern, Section and Song controls. The ability to change patterns or sections via external control would be very useful especially in live settings.
- The ModMatrix itself: Depth, Polarity, Consume and Offset amounts, per modulation slot and track.
Another great reason for doing this: some of these parameters can only be currently controlled via the Hapax’s stepped encoders, instead of a dedicated controller with presets such as the Novation Launch Control. While the controllers are quality and awesome for most use cases, when it comes to going through 128 values with a turn of the wrist, it takes a long time compared to a dedicated controller.
I don’t know the best way to implement this, maybe it’s via new Effects, maybe it’s via preset modulation slots (Mod 1,2,3…n) assigned at the destination (for example row microtime can be either 0-100% or Mod 1-32), maybe it’s also via a dedicated section in the settings menu for device-level destinations (mutes/transport).
What I do know is that opening the Hapax’s internal parameters to modulation would be super useful for a lot of people with very different use cases and extend its possibilities enormously. Thanks for all the great work you’ve done so far in extending the Hapax’s capabilities, and hope you’ll dedicate an update to implementing this.
