Feature Request: Merging patterns?

Edited subject to reflect Feature Request. Created a support ticket online referencing this post.

What I’d like to do is take two or more patterns (or clips?) and merge them together to create a new pattern, then edit it to reduce clutter, change notes, etc.

Here’s my logic – while building up a musical piece using Patterns, I tend to start out using minimal concept for intro and after a few bars expand upon it giving it more life. And continue on that approach until a crescendo is reached followed by fading, etc. Now I’m not a musician but it seems that approach is quite common, albeit a crude explanation.

It would be cool to select multiple patterns then Copy/Paste them to empty slot. Can the Hapax do that today?

Cheers!

it is a quite common method of building tracks but pretty much have to create that in the single pattern from the start, alas. would be nice if there were an “insert measures” function but currently adding measures to extend a given pattern length merely extends the pattern at the end while leaving the existing measures in place as written. would be less of an issue with more patterns overall but until then . . . you get 7 per track to make it all work if you want to arrange your patterns into sections/songs. which really isn’t super feasible for the kind of track building you’re describing

(in theory, you could use the probability and math functions in step mode to do the buildups in a shorter pattern but (1) you’re still limited to 7 patterns overall if you’re arranging them in song mode; and (2) the probabilities reset when sections change in song mode so that doesn’t always get you where you need to be either)

There’s no specific insert that I know of, but after extending the track to you can hold “all” and move the whole lot to the desired location with the < > buttons.

you can but it still always appends any new measures to the end of the pattern so . . . depending how much longer you want it to be that can be a lot of scrolling to move steps around

Sure, not necessarily super convenient, just possible. IIRC moving across begin/end will wrap around, which in some situations is much faster.

So the answer to merging patterns is unavailable today. I appreciate the confirmations and I’ll submit this as a Feature Request.

Cheers

Well you can certainly copy-paste across patterns (and tracks). There just isn’t any specific merge function.

Yup, but that doesn’t produce the results that I’m trying to accomplish.

In what way? What are you expecting, and what happens?

Anyway, I can’t imagine manual merging to any larger degree being a convenient way to work on Hapax. Note that you can use loop points to work on a specific part of a longer track/pattern: Hapax Manual | Squarp instruments

Copy and pasting patterns does just that and provides expected results. Great for rearranging patterns, however, merging multiple patterns to a single pattern is what was suggested as feature request. As for me, if I could merge the velocities and/or note lengths, etc., then that will same me a ton of time vs trying to match those settings to help reduce the stark differences when they get played.

no idea if it’s technically feasible or not but one possible workflow fix would be, say, holding 2d while copying/pasting one existing pattern to a second existing pattern. currently, C&P just replaces the second pattern with the first. but holding 2d as “merge” could basically append the second pattern to the end of the first one

Thanks, will have to give that a try.

Edited: Too bad there isn’t a way to export the patterns to an editable file on SD, (where I can more easily make changes and re-import them back in)

it doesn’t currently work that way on Hapax. just suggesting one way it could work in future updates if they wanted to add a merge pattern feature

Understood. Had initially tried holding down 2nd button prior to posting here, hoping to find some non-documented feature.

Oh. By “copy-paste across patterns” I meant copy-pasting notes, not patterns. In step-mode, with the “all” button you can select all notes from then copy to desired target. Repeat for as many parts as you have. Maybe not convenient, but possible.
