What are your favorite FX tricks? Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the sheer possibilities.
maybe shaper on lfo or env, or side chaining a cc to an event, routing notes to a separate usb output so i can record them in addition to playing something hooked up to the din plugs, controlling an lfo parameter with another lfo, basically controlling one fx with multiple fx or mod lanesâŚ
pair hapax with a DAW and you can do crazy midi backflips with direct control from hapax
Can you elaborate. What will a shaper on an LFO do?
make the slope logarithmic to exponential with some waveshaping. it can radically change the shape of anything you apply it to. it can make things more dramatic and expressive.
you can use arpeggiator in combo with euclidean sequencer to get some unexpected results, while modulating parameters of either with lfo, env or modulation lane. or even live cc fader or cv input via the matrix. the fx section can get deep and yield some very interesting results
a lot of whats interesting about what you can do with fx onboard hapax is how you have your sound source set to respond. a single cc out of hapax could for instance control a simple parameter like filter cutoff or amp but if you have a macro set up within your synth you could control many separate parameters with the same single cc. i think hapax does a ton to get to that goal of a sonically interesting result but truly most of it should happen in your synth architecture.

The CC macro is something Iâve been thinking about too. Probably easier to do on a computer synth or some router layer in between: i.e. hapax cc â router â array of synths. The hardware synths seem like one to one thus the router. I donât think I can multi mapping on a Digitone. Velocity modulation + CC macros⌠Jam on!
yeah not all synths have macros. in terms of midi synths im thinking vital or serum of course. the problem with controlling several synth parameters from hapax is you can easily overload the din cable with too many messages and then it becomes sloppy potentially. but also synths that arent modern can choke on too many messages but im happy to say even modern cheap synths aka volca sample can take a lot without becoming sloppy. if youre talking about modular tho theres many ways to make a âmacroâ including modules like addac vc transitions. i think korgs newest synths from the last few years include macro knobs. i might be wrong. but certainly many plugins do. and there are midi only plugins that introduce this kind of utility but youre still limited by the hardware and data cap before sloppiness encroaches. but if youre controlling plugins there is never slop, especially with hapaxâs usb out to daw. just use your ears of course!
and by the way theres stuff on the hapax i am totally ignorant to so its not like im an expert. but i have explored the modulation and fx parts and its what i love about hapax. and probably the almost button per function interface and also the elegant display of whats going on. i am waiting for a few minor things of course!
Something you can do with almost any synth is appropriate a standard MIDI source parameter as your âmacro.â For example, Digitone, like many modern synths, allows sources mod-wheel, breath, pressure, and aftertouch to be assigned to multiple parameters. Since youâre likely not using breath as a source, that can be your âmacro.â Assign up to 4 parameters (max on Digitone) and send automation to CC2 from the Hapax. You can do the same with mod wheel if youâre not using one.
One of my go-to tricks is to use the register â chance â random â scaler for generative ambient patches.

Probably the best trick Iâve found with the new Spring effect so far is using it as a slew for the resonator on the torso S4. It took a bit of fiddling with the min/max and offset settings to get the MIDI CC values to line up with actual notes. Iâm honestly surprised Squarp still hasnât added some kind of dedicated Math effect
, so you wouldnât have to route CC between different tracks just to remap values properly. The end result is a really nice rubbery, metallic sound that can actually be played melodically. Pretty happy with this one, so I thought Iâd share it in case someone else wants to try the same idea.
I tried using the Spring last night with some of the other great tricks I learned in this thread, but couldnât really understand it, so hoping to give it a go again. I hooked up an LFO to some of the Spring parameters but not sure if I understood how it is supposed to work.

I use a prophet 12 module, and you can assign many things to its slider, which you then control with a single CC. Also multiple velocity parameters is easy to setup. Elektrons is similar. (breath, modwheel controlling multiple targets.)
HAPAX has many features and itâs easy to forget about them.
Each project has 2 Project Wide LFOs which can be accessed via [2nd] + [FX Button].
Then on the FXs page for the track, you can add the project wide LFO as a modulation source to any destination. This is helpful if you want a global LFO across multiple tracks and frees up an FX slot or two.

Another thing, I have a Prophet 10 rev4 and it just has one onboard LFO, but just about all of the knobs and switches are controllable via MIDI. I have an instrument definition set up and I like to use the the LFO and automation outs to control various parameters to get sounds you couldnât normally get from a Prophet.
