Drum or poly? Creative workflow comparison

Hi everyone,

I know this topic has come up before, but I’d love to focus specifically on workflow experiences when using external drum machines with 8+ parts, especially when combining them with polyphonic sequencing.

For example, units like the Korg Sample (and similar multi-part drum machines) let you sequence multiple voices, but I’m curious how people approach this when trying to use poly features creatively rather than just one-note-per-track drum programming.

Some things I’d love to hear about:

• Do you sequence each drum part monophonically, or do you intentionally use poly tracks to trigger layered sounds?
• Any tips for using polyphony for chords or stacked hits (like layered snares, tuned percussion, etc.)?
• Do you prefer one track per drum voice, or grouping multiple sounds per track and relying on poly?
• How do you handle velocity and articulation when multiple hits share a track?
• Does poly sequencing help or complicate your workflow?

I’m especially interested in:

  • faster performance workflows

  • live jamming setups

  • creative use of poly for drum textures

  • avoiding note overlap issues

Even though this is a common topic, I’d really like to dig into how people actually work day-to-day, not just which device is better.

Any tricks, lessons learned, or “aha” moments would be super helpful :folded_hands:

Thanks!

If you tell me:

  • which sequencer you’re using

  • or which drum machine besides Korg Sample
