Double tap not working

Found this bit in the manual:

Tried double tapping but it didn’t seem to do anything in either mode.
Am I doing something wrong?

Possibly, but it may not be having as much effect as you expect with the Velocity setting and not really doing what you might imagine with the Glide setting. The double tap timing seems fairly normal and as you’d expect (like double clicking a mouse or something), so I doubt you are doing that wrong.

By default a (single tap) note will have a velocity of 100. With a double tap instead that note would have a velocity of 50 - it basically halves whatever the velocity value is currently at. How noticeable a difference it is will depend on how the sound you are triggering responds to velocity. Once the note is entered press and hold the relevant step pad and check what velocity Pyramid’s screen tells you it is. Beware though that once you press and hold that lower velocity note’s pad that velocity will replace the current velocity (so the next note you enter will have that velocity, or half that, if don’t set the velocity back before you double tap, of course). I think the point of the Double Tap here is to give you a quick way to input ‘accented’ and ‘non-accented’ notes, sort of aping some classic step sequencers like those on classic synths/drum machines of old. You wouldn’t really be checking the velocity (press and hold a step) if you were using this as I think they imagine. You’d be inputting, deleting, double tapping, etc, to quickly fill your notes in, you’d be happy with just the two velocity settings (at least at that stage). Oh, and I think you probably need to be entering a ‘new’ note on an empty step (delete notes of that pitch on the particular steps) if you want to input halved velocity notes with the double tap, though I’m not totally sure on that.

With the Double Tap Mode set to Glide all it does is extend the note width by a step (it doesn’t ‘know’ how far away the next note is). If the note width is 1 step for the Double Tap Glide to work like a glide the ‘next note’ would have to be on step 2. If the ‘next note’ is on step 3 you’d want to increase the note width to 2 (before you double tap). So it is really, again, a way to quickly emulate some classic style step sequencer behaviour (e.g. TB-303), you set your note width to whatever (16th notes, 8th notes, etc,) then fill in the steps, double tapping where you want glides. As I’m sure you realise the next note needs to be a different pitch to hear the glide. And again, I think you want to ensure there isn’t a note already on that step (at that pitch) before you double tap. And like it says, it is the preceeding note you want to be double tapping (so the glide goes from it to the next note).

Hope that helps.

Hi hoofjaw,

Thank you for detailed reply.

On further testing, double tap in Velocity mode does work. Not sure what I was doing wrong previously (maybe not fast enough?) but now I see that double tap creates a step with velocity being half of current value, as you describe.

In Glide mode I didn’t see any difference in step length between single and double tap. That’s not a big deal, though ))

Thanks again & best wishes
Boris

Hi Boris,

That’s nice of you, thank you.

It’s odd that you don’t see any difference in the note width when single or double tapping the step pads with the double tap mode set to glide. I get a longer note when I do it on my Pyramid (it has the latest firmware installed). I think it’s a step longer and it will probably be more or less apparent with different note widths set and/or different zoom settings. I didn’t test it out with different zoom levels though, and only tried changing the note width (with the same zoom level which added the same amount of extra note length - I think that was 1 step, which also happened to be the same as the default note width on my Pyramid, I think).

The glide setting doesn’t seem all that useful to me. It might be handy for some scenarios, I suppose.

The velocity double tap mode setting seems a bit more handy. I’m glad at least that one is working for you.

I hope the Pyramid is treating you well.

All the best.

Hi hoofjaw,

Indeed it’s strange that glide mode doesn’t seem to work, I’m on the latest firmware too. But it’s really not a big deal, it’s easy to create glides the usual way (just tap a step and turn the “width” knob one notch).

Besides, I just bought a Digitakt II, so much as I like the Pyramid it will have to take a back seat ))

All the best.
