Hi, I’m super late to the party here, but finally going DAWless and the Pyramid covers nearly all my needs. I apologize if this has been asked before, but I couldn’t find this specific question anywhere.
I’ve had success with a MIDI USB host and it works great to basically convert the Pyramid’s USB MIDI I/O to DIN MIDI. I’d love to have one MIDI controller multitrack to Bank A while my other MIDI controller multitrack to Bank B. This way I can play keys/synths along the 16 Bank A MIDI channels from my keyboard MIDI controller and record drum tracks from my external drum machine into some (let’s say 4-6) of the tracks of Bank B. There seems to only be a single bank setting for MIDI IN that applies to both MIDI inputs (DIN and USB), almost as if both MIDI Inputs are internally getting merged before being routed to a bank. So I was curious if there was any way to do this, even if it’s a bit hacky.
The current approach requires me to switch that setting in between keys and drum recordings in Live Mode, and I’d love to remove that obstacle from my workflow. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks all!
I actually stumbled upon this comment from a previous post: Midi channel "clash" - #15 by thetechnobear that says the two streams are merged. Clearly if no one chimes in here to tell me otherwise, it looks like my initial suspicion will have turned out to be true.
It’s not a huge obstacle to change the multitrack bank going from keyboard track recording to drum track recording, but also maybe it’ll motivate me to use the Pyramid itself more directly for drums instead of my drum machine. Also it looks like I won’t need to use a MIDI Merge box for my second keyboard/MIDI controller if there’s one implicitly baked into the Pyramid.
I haven’t tried using Multitrack Bank settings for the Omni Mode in the MIDI In Settings, but I fear your understanding is right. Despite the two potential physical MIDI inputs Pyramid just sees them as one merged input, limiting you to 16 MIDI In channels at any one time.
The only routings available are those listed in the Omni Mode settings. So I think you suspect right, if you want to multitrack with some channels routed to Bank A Tracks and some to Bank B Tracks, you’ll need to change the Omni Mode Setting.
But like I say, I don’t use the Multitrack Bank settings, so maybe someone who does may have chirp up with a cunning workaround.
