Hi there. I’m new here and interested in a Hapax. I’ve been pouring over the manual and searching around a bit here but I am unsure of the answer to this. I’d like to know how versatile the ‘math’ functionality is on the Hapax.
Here is something I love to do on the OPXY: Lets say I wanted a particular step to transpose up a 5th every third out of four times it plays. Would this be possible by combining the maths and the midi effects in a specific way?

Thanks for your input and help.

There is probably another way to do this but Math is just conditional on if a note is played or not. An easy way to achieve what you want would be to place both possible notes on the same step (Original, and up a 5th) and then set the Math value on the original to not play every 3 of 4 loops (!3:4) and set the up a 5th to play every 3 of 4 loops (3:4).

Or just make your sequence 3x as long! 😊

Ah that’s good to know, thank you. Are the math functions completely definable variables or do you just have a predefined list? This was unclear to me.

Also, can midi effects by turned on or off on a per-step basis with the math functions yet or is it still limited just to ‘fill’? That would be a killer feature.

The Math (Conditional Trigs) behavior is described in the full PDF manual starting at the bottom of page 56.

They are not functions with definable variables - you select from a list of options.

Check out the NO FX Math option for something like what you are seeking.

Thank you very much for your help here. I’m now wondering if Arpoly would be a better way to get me what I am looking for. Essentially, I’d like to emulate something I love doing with my Music Easel Command but is also done with other modular synths quite easily:

I’ll send it an arpeggiated pattern but have an additional 5 step sequencer adding pitch to the incoming notes. I’ll set some of the steps to root, some to octave and some to a 5th. The arp will have usually have 7 or 8 steps and the sequencer will be set to between 4 and 5 usually. This creates a wonderful fractal-ish sounding arp that is decidedly NOT random as there is a pattern too it. The trick is, the Sequencer only advances a step when it receives an incoming note from the arp, so different rhythmic patterns can be used as well.

So I guess my question is, can you set Arpoly to only advance on incoming notes? Is there a ‘stopped’ speed that would do this, advancing a pulse for every incoming note? It seems like this could be a the perfect solution to this scenario.

This question is too specific and out of my depth to be able to answer.

That’s ok. Thank you. Perhaps someone else will know or I could reach out to Squarp directly if I really felt like I HAD to know.

I wish there was a FX as well as the existing NO FX. Seems odd to not have that option, would be useful.

You can’t set Arpoly to advance per note, instead the Arpoly resets on each new note.

I understand what you’re trying to do however and coming from a modular system something like you’re describing is relatively easy to do (assuming you have the right modules).

I wondered if the LFO would enable what you are trying to achieve. You could point a square LFO to the Transpose parameter in the Scaler effect. However, to make this work as you would want, you would need some kind of control over the pulse width of the LFO (to make the effect active only at a certain point and narrow enough to only transpose 1 note). But, that too would not advance based on another sequence’s note pattern. On top of that, changing values like Transpose mid-note cuts the note short (rather than sample & holding the value until the note ends). So it doesn’t really sound that great unless you time it exactly. I kind of gave up on trying to do any of this type of sequencing with Hapax.

I wish Hapax was a little more patch programmable to achieve some of this modular way of composing but it’s not really that at all.

Isn’t having no math option selected or anything other than NO FX the same outcome as an FX math option would be?

My understanding is that the default behavior is for the track to go through the effects that are enabled.

NO FX lets you turn this off per note but I can’t understand what an FX option would do that omitting the NO FX on a note/step would not.

Yes, you’re right. I was maybe hoping for an easier way than having to set all notes to NO FX and then going back in and turning that off for ones to be processed. But I can see that because the default option is to send all notes to the FX this would be weird.

Thanks for the clarification, makes sense.
