This is my third Hapax, and this time I’m not letting it go.

Over the past few years, I kept going back and forth. Every time I put together a DAWless setup, I eventually convinced myself that working in a DAW was the better option. It just seemed more practical. So I’d sell the hardware, return to the computer, and sooner or later the same realization would hit me again.

A DAW can do almost everything, but for me it just isn’t as inspiring. It lacks the tactile connection, the feeling of interacting with an instrument rather than software.

I also went through the whole OXI journey. It’s fantastic gear, and I have nothing but respect for what they’ve built, but in the end it just wasn’t the right fit for the way I like to work.

It took me a long time, and it cost me quite a bit of money, to finally accept what really works for me.

Now, with my third Hapax, I honestly feel like I’ve arrived where I belong: a hybrid workflow.

The creative process happens on the Hapax in a DAWless setup, and the final arrangement, mixing, and polishing happen in the DAW. For me, that’s the perfect balance and truly the best of both worlds.

And a huge thank you to the Squarp team. OS 3.2 is simply amazing. ❤

I see you have also posted an instrument definition for the zoom L6 mixer there, I’ve been contemplating getting something like that myself. Can you talk a bit about your workflow? Do you find yourself doing much with automation with it?

Hi there! The L6 Max is just a fantastic little mixer, and I knew I had to get one. The fact that you can automate it via CC messages is a nice bonus for me and actually incredibly useful.

This whole setup is still pretty new. Just yesterday I created automation for the L6 on a separate track to fade the audio in and out. It works incredibly smoothly.

One of my favorite features of the L6 is the Sub Mix output. I use it as a stereo send to the Boss reverb, while the Monitor Out goes to the Tonverk for sampling.

I’ll try to make a video about the whole setup because I think it’s really worth sharing. It’s actually the first setup I’ve had that can literally do everything I want without any rough edges so far. I absolutely love it.

That’s great, I hope you do make a video. The equalizer per track is interesting to me, being able to automate that would open up a lot of possibilities. That’s one thing I miss from when I was working out of ableton.

Well here we go with a little music video that shows at least that this combo can make some noise 😉

I removed the Boss RV-500 from the setup. The submix is now going to a bus of the tonverk. This is so much fun.
