Hi there,

Today is a special day: I just received a brand new Hapax! Finally!

I’m kind of stuck with an issue with MIDI though: I’d like the Hapax to be able to pass through some MIDI information coming from my Octatrack, and it quite doesn’t work with the actual track I’m working on: I get some kind of MIDI glitches (weird synchronisation), and stuck notes.

Basically, I want the Hapax to be the MIDI master for building up my tracks, develop them, control the other machines… But: I love the Octatrack for some of its sequencing capabilities, and my idea for this setup would to be able to control any synth with one of the two sequencers, at will. (I also thought I could possibly process the MIDI data sent up by the Octatrack with the MIDI effects of the Hapax… but let’s manage to fix the current situation first before adding some processing in the chain…)

So here’s my setup : Hapax is set to master and OT to slave (for the MIDI transport I mean - I also want the Hapax to trigger some pattern changes on the OT, using MIDI Program Changes - and I’d also like to be able to sequence some sounds of the OT using the sequencer of the Hapax). Besides I connected the OT’s MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN Port A of the Hapax: I have one track running into the Hapax, which has this MIDI port selected as its input, and its MIDI out is set up to the port linked to the synth I want to control (a Korg Opsix). As I said: the sync of the notes is just weird, and after some seconds a MIDI note will stuck and I just get a never-ending legato. If I connect the OT directly to the Opsix, it works perfectly.

So I wanted to ask here if you people could have some insights about this issue. I must say I’m a bit overwhelmed with all this MIDI information going in all directions… I might be doing it wrong.

Thanks for having read!

So i spent several hours this morning trying to understand the problem, restarting from scratch: blank projects on both machines, developing on this base towards the situation I was initially facing.

I didn’t solve the problem, but found something about it: **the mono legato behaviour of the synth part I want to make play properly doesn’t translate to the Korg Opsix when the Hapax stands in between.**

I created two identical patterns on both sequencers : a really simple two notes legato playing every four steps (the second note makes the first slide, and both notes then stop one step before the third note plays : this pattern in repeat). When the Hapax-pattern plays, the notes sound as expected (legato-style) ; when the OT-pattern plays though, the second note doesn’t slide the first one: it retriggers the synth envelopes (actually this behaviour seems to be random: it happens most of the time ; some times it will play legato).

I’m using one Hapax track for both patterns: this track 1 contains the Hapax pattern, but it also takes as track input the OT’s MIDI output (transmitting the OT’s pattern). The output of this Hapax’s track 1 is sent to the Opsix. I’m sure of how I sequenced the data here : if I connect the OT’s MIDI output directly into the Opsix, the notes will play correctly, with the legato.

Here are screenshots of the Hapax Monitor, and they confirm there’s a translation of the data going on into the Hapax! The output information : is → Note 1 on / Note 1 Off / Note 2 on / Note 2 off. It should be identical to the input data though! → Note 1 on / Note 2 on / Note 1 off / Note 2 off.

I tried disabling the “Unison” option in the Hapax MISC settings, but it didn’t change anything.

Sorry for this long post… I’d be glad if someone had any clue on that… Thanks for you attention.

This is a big clue of a possible MIDI loop.

Thanks for this hint, I’ll try to think in that direction. The MIDI monitor of the Hapax doesn’t display anything which would indicate such a loop but who knows… I still think that is the cause of the problem somehow.

Is there some MIDI going out from Korg? Into OT? Those would be mine suspects. Disconnect those.

No no the Opsix is just intended to play, not to control anything. Its MIDI Out is disconnected
