hapaxOS 3.20 stable release is out!

I have the usb device port currently free… I mean, if Elektron have just released a usb-> CV box, just saying… :joy::joy:

I use HAPAX with Osmose… so I very much enjoy its MPE features. But this most recent update is great, too!

I believe there is a bug in the AFTR track type - it shows the same live keyboard as MPE track type. Consequently, the live keyboard doesn’t work on AFTR track type - it does not trigger external synths (while the sequencer does).

Once this is fixed, POLY track is becoming somewhat unnecessary, correct? We can change all POLY definitions to an AFTR definitions (sure, doesn’t make sense for synths that don’t respond to AT).

EDIT: It doesn’t respond correctly to the output channels settings. It either sends on multiple channels or it sends on a single channel that is usually different from the track channel. So I guess some sort of mix up with MPE as suggested above.

EDIT2: Hmm, the patterns for POLY and AFTR are independent, so… we have twice the number of chromatic patterns in a project track available now?!

As I understand it, polyAT should send each note on channel 2-16 like MPE. But I have noticed that in Live mode this happens, but in Step mode it does not.

I’ll be honest, it just does not work for me currently. I hope it’s user error on my part. I’m trying to get it working in Bitwig and having no luck at all.

it’s the same for me too

I did notice when using MIDI Monitor that the poly aftertouch is sent via CC in live mode and aftertouch message in step mode. I’m using a Sequential Prophet 10 rev4 which does accept polyAT. Maybe an oversight somewhere?

According to the manual, AFTR (Poly Aftertouch) type tracks only use one Midi channel like a Poly track.

Link directly to AFTR in manual

It says the notes are differentiated for separate pressure values by pitch (note value) rather than cascaded across multiple channels like MPE would be.

Thanks for clarifying. Though on a Poly AT track in Live mode each note from Hapax comes into Bitwig on a separate channel so… :person_shrugging:

Also, this from the PolyAT section is also confusing…

Like an MPE track, every note carries its own pressure curve, which you can draw and edit in Step mode exactly like the MPE pressure lane

But further up the page in the MPE section the manual says…

Step–by–step editing of XYZ curves within an MPE note is not supported. These expressive parameters automation can only be created during live recording using an external MPE-capable controller.

So can you create and edit pressure curves on the Hapax or not? I can only figure out how to set a base fixed value per note… not that it’s working in Bitwig however.

I’m not sure if this could be leftover language in the manual from the pre-3.0 update when it was true that Hapax didn’t support any MPE editing - it could simply record live performances from an external MPE keyboard and play them back. There’s no archive of the old manuals so it’s hard to say for certain.

why speculate tho? ask using the contact form and i promise youll get an answer

Regular poly AT is always sent over 1 channel. That’s per midi 1.0 spec. MPE utilizes multiple channels to overcome the limitations of the midi spec to also send slide and pitch per note.

Using one or many channels has no relation to bandwidth, all these messages are being sent sequentially to the same serial interface anyway.

You’re right, I mixed things up. MPE uses multiple channels to be able to a cc value for pitch and slide per note, as cc values are always per channel. I edited my post to remove the incorrect parts.

Hello everybody, 3.21 is out and it fixes what you were seeing on AFTR tracks.

@KidYoshiSan you were right, it wasn’t user error. In Live mode (and in step preview) the pads were sending notes on channel 1, then 2, then 3, as if the track was an MPE track.

@ncapone87 the CC you saw in Live mode came from the PRESSUR and TIMBRE controls on the left screen, which were sending channel aftertouch and CC74. They make no sense on an AFTR track so they’re gone, same thing.

It should work like a charm now, if not tell me :).

Projects and settings from 3.20 load unchanged, so it’s a drop-in update.

Cheers,

Benoit

Great, I’ll check it out

thanks! I’ll check it out this afternoon. Looking forward to utilizing this with my Prophet 10!

lol, no, it’s still all over the place

Live mode seems fine now, although I was expecting an aftertouch pot next to the velocity pot. Maybe it wouldn’t work nicely / would be useless, I don’t know.

The step mode is where the main issue remains unfixed:

  • still shows MPE “ROLI” keys
  • there is still timbre and pitch under the velocity pot

It seems that it works ok on the Prophet 10. I’ll need to play around with it some more.

I’m using Roli too, I haven’t updated to .21 yet though

Hmmmm as this isn’t an approved plug-in Apple’s security won’t run it (without bypassing it via Terminal). For the Mac users running Bitwig, recreate this in The Grid to get you up to a speedy 96ppqn :rocket:
