I’ve had the Hapax for a couple months and I still don’t understand how to input notes in step mode from my midi keyboard.
Pattern mode + Live record works perfectly fine.
“Learn” shows the correct values of whatever note(s) I have pressed in Step mode. But as soon as I press a pad it just inserts the single note that corresponds with that pad.
I have read around a lot and seen a lot of people complaing who also can’t figure this out.
What am I doing wrong?
On elektron it’s very simple, press and hold a step, press whatever notes you want, and that’s it. Very intuitive.
On Hapax, with “Learn” I feel like i should be able to just press any column step and it should insert my chord or press notes onto the corresponding ntoe or something like that.
So what gives?
I have seen previously on the forum that “Learn” should set the grid to so the lowest row corresponds to the note, but that doesn’t work at all for me. And chords don’t work at all for me even though “Learn” shows the chord I just input.
Anyway this is not intuitive at all, for all the things I like about the Hapax, this one is extremely frustrating.

The issue stems from allowing flexibility to do other things as well. (+ of course being more or less primary intended / constrained for the live mode keyboard.
For the placement of the learn buffer, you must do a really short tap! Somehow, it seems more sensitive than normal. Think about it like this - you must not hold / gate the step for 250 ms or whatever your casual press in and let go produces. You must tap the step thinking you are going to gate it for 100 ms.
That’s all there is to it.
Is it intuitive, correctly documented or easy to figure out? Fuck no. Somehow, people figure it out though

My Learn related feature ideas:
Push encoder learn preview
(misc setting) Learn preview on/off - when enabled, pressing main encoder triggers the learn buffer rather then the bottom row note. Consider making ON default or only option.
Learn history
Learn history remembers 10-20 last placed learned notes / chords. Turning E2 scrolls through history with auto trigger of notes after something like 250ms on a particular history item. Pressing E2 trigges the notes again. Pressing / turning E1 exists learn mode.

I am on latest firmware and that (fast tap) does not work at all for me.
In fact, I can’t figure out how to insert a chord I play on my keyboard on a certain step at all. I’ve tried what seems like everything.
What am I doing wrong?
I play a Cmin chord, I see that chord populate the “Learn” field with Cmin. Now how do I insert that say on the first step for a length of 1:8?
Nothing work. It’s annoying. Whatever behavior they’ve designed here for steps from an external midi keyboard is so dense that there’s tons of threads about it and it still is confusing as to what I am supposed to do, and I still have yet to see it work.
I should just be able to hold any column and press the notes, they’ve made it ridiculously complicated.
For everything the did right (which is a lot) this is some ass backwards design

I don’t blame your confusion but i feel like it works alright once you understand it.
Are you using the Hapax Keyboard or an external midi controller?
I just think it’s easier to stay on the STEP page while doing this rather than having to switch to the keyboard, anyways…

On the STEP page - press the encoder that corresponds to the “Learn” (C +2) - set velocity - set length.
Now this is where it gets confusing. In the learn mode it might say (C+2) - it moves the step grid so that C is at the pad at the very bottom. Press that pad at the very bottom and it places your chord. EX. C-E-G.
Buts lets just say you play a chord (D-G-A). While in learn mode, it will only display the first note that got played - maybe it registered A first, it’ll show as [A +2], because of this, the step grid is then shifted so that A is at the very bottom. Whatever letter note that is displayed is what gets shifted to the pad at the very bottom. Tap the very bottom pad to place your chord. But something weird happens…
The step grid is then shifted so that the very bottom pad is now D. But it still places the chord correctly.
All you need to remember is that to place your chord in step mode - just place it by pressing the bottom row of pads.

I’m telling you it absolutely does not do this for me, i read this suggestion elsewhere before I made this post and it does not work at all.
The bottom row still corresponds to whatever view the Step mode is on, regardless of what note I play from my external midi keyboard. It just enters that single note as if learn does nothing whatsoever, even though I see the C+2 in the learn field.

Yes it’s overly complex.
Should be as simple as pressing the pad you want the chord placed at.
It was confusing for me too, wish it was a little smoother
