Drum tracks: 16 channels?

My topic was to extent an already existing implementation, not to discuss if this implementation already done by squarp team is usefull or not.

I think it’s one of most requested feature! Lets wait and see :crossed_fingers:

I know it’s not the most ideal solution, but can’t you just use another drum track on a different track?

Track 1 - Drum track - Midi 1-8
Track 2 - Drum track - Midi 9-16

Also if you want , you can switch to POLY and you’ll have a 88 ‘channels/parts’ drum kit

My post ain’t no workaround , it’s just the best option as Drum Track serve no purpose :face_in_clouds:

Requests aren’t for this forum then, you should make a feature request here Contact us | Squarp instruments

I’m not sure if you’re joking but I think there are some good reason for Drum tracks!

  • I find it easier in a Drum track to set an arbitrary value for each track (rather than having a music scale spread across the grid.)
  • Also, I don’t think you can have a poly track send triggers out to multiple channels (or can you?)

On one Drum track, I’m sending Kick to Assimil8or on Track 10 (via Locutus MIDI expander) and CHHT and OHHT out to Mutant Hihats on Track 11 (via FH-2 MIDI-to-CV converter).

@yomanfree if you have 16 channels you’ll have to swap to a second page to see them all, which is exactly what you can do. As @Zacarycaine explained

Track 1 - Drum track - Lane 1-8
Track 2 - Drum track - Lane 9-16

All drums can actually be set to trigger on the same MIDI channel. Go to Live view on a Drum track and you can change the channel of any lane.

How is what you are asking any different? Is this the crux of your complaint:

you want to scroll down and up to swap between pages instead of moving left to right (from Track 1 to Track 2)??

Hello,

not joking, it’s just my personal need, I have a TR8S and found no benefit in using Drum Track at all, I’ve open the manual see if I was missing something, but for me Poly is the way to go. No scale is involved on my Poly ‘drum’ Track, the STEP grid is ok for editing.

If I had another Drum Machine with 8 track or eight Drum modules maybe I’ll use Drum track then …

best

Seems this is what the OP was seeking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hope this could come soon. Having a drum machine with 12 or 16 channels is a bit painfull with 8 channels…

thank you…

I love it! And there’s room for one button per function on both sides of the grid. Genius :star_struck:

Honestly I got my Hapax a week ago and was just programming my 1985 Korg DDD-1 on it last night when I realized that drum tracks only allow 8 instrument “lanes” when the DDD-1 has 12. Is it not a legitimate complaint that 8 is restrictive? Like if you had to split a keyboard for a synthesizer into 2 separate tracks because only half the keyboard was available on one track wouldn’t that seem pretty limiting?

Hi,

Who said it was not a legitimate complaint? Don’t get me wrong , I clearly think it is and I think a lot of people are waiting for it :crossed_fingers:

Yeah no one disagrees that’s it’s a problem. I’m just not sure what the OP expects the solution to look like.

@digitalgeist
How would you like Hapax to solve it? more lanes (larger, more expensive device)? Or a second “page” (like you can do with a second track today)?

EDIT: OK now I no longer think it’s a problem

Considering you can just use the main knob to scroll through the keyboard register on a normal track why can’t you on a drum track? Just have the next page/8 drum devices in a continuous scroll up or down? I’m sure it’s been discussed ad nauseum and I’m not a programmer at all so I don’t realize how much of an ask it would be, if the unit would even be capable of something like that. Anyway just have two tracks dedicated to one device isn’t that big of a deal just seems like a weird workaround considering how powerful the Hapax is in general.

Yeah that would be perfect IMO

Well it’s software so anything is possible. But devs would also have to rework the drum lane naming interface for as second page. And the inst def for more drum lanes, and a bunch of logic around copy and paste (to handle both pages). And the Live view grid and UI would need to be rethought….Would you want all 16 lanes on Live view but with fewer velocity options? or two pages on Live view?

You effectively get exactly what you want today if you add a second drum track, except that you lose one track – you move sideways to see the next page, instead of vertically.

OR just use Poly for drums like @**mikei

So I can both see why many people want this, but also why Hapax has not made it a priority – I woudln’t make it a priority either! It doesn’t really block anyone from doing anything.

Well said! I must agree with your arguments, and now the more I think about it, the more I think I need a FOLD option for Poly Track, because for BIG drum kits or even one shot FX tracks with lot of samples (more than eight , sometimes 88  ) or even editing simple melody on a poly track , when I use a sample played on octave C6 and another on octave C1 it’s very hard to see whats happening on the grid. The scale is doing it already and this lead me back to the need of VERTICAL ZOOMING or a FOLDING option. The HAPAX is lacking in this department, really this is making the grid look very clumsy, kind of unfinished… and I agree that this should be PRIORITIZED over 16 drum lanes.
