About to buy a Hapax....some questions

Hello all. Just signed up after lurking here while researching the Hapax - it’s been sitting ominously in my Thomann cart for a while now…
I’m about ready to pull the trigger on it as a replacement for my Torso T-1, which has been my main sequencer since its release. It’s been an inspiring and enjoyable beast, but I feel like I’ve hit its limits in a studio situation. I love the ability to be able to randomise the MIDI channel of a track and then freeze the randomness as required. It’s become a major part of my creative workflow.
So here’s my question: is it possible to do something similar on the Hapax? Specifically, can you apply randomisation to the MIDI channel of a track? I’ve watched all the Hapax related videos on Youtube but not seen any mention of this feature and my brain is not wired to search for this in a manual of a device I don’t own yet
I sure am looking forward to having a screen again and the ability to undo / redo. Feels luxurious.
You can go so brilliantly deep with the T-1 but it’s just too easy to lose track of what’s actually going on in any given track once you’ve gone down the randomisation rabbit hole…
Has anyone here made the switch from the T-1 exclusively to the Hapax?
Cheers
Skip.

keep both because i dont think hapax has that feature. hapax has many wonderful things the t-1 doesnt im confident!

Ah that’s a shame but yeah looking forward to getting stuck into all the other biz the Hapax can do
Could the Hapax breathe some life into my long neglected original OP-1? It’s been sat on my shelf unused since I no longer commute to work…

I think you can use the LFO effect in “rand” mode in conjunction with the “OUTPUT” effect. Might take a little experimentation to get exactly the right parameters. Using something like Fill in the mod matrix to enable/disable the LFO might “freeze” things.. Not so sure about that last part

EDIT: oh wait by “freeze” do you mean commit the LFO to the track? I’m not so sure about that..

You can randomise the output of a track to different MIDI channels…

On your channel’s FX chain, add an Output module, set the Consume switch to on (will stop it sending out to the original channel)
Then next chain add an LFO, set it to Random, Sync on, choose your rate (1/16, 1/8, whatever) and then set the Destination to FX1 - Output, and then Channel.
When you play a sequence, it’ll randomise the output channel for each trigger of the LFO.

You can’t ‘write’ that output to the track sadly, but gets you at last half the way there!

EDIT: You can’t ‘freeze’ the LFO, but you can program in the output channel per note using an Automation lane, with it’s destination set to FX1 - Output / Channel. But you would have to do the ‘randomisation’ manually…

ah you beat me to it!

Actually decided that would be really neat, so made a feature request to add a Destination for the LFO to be an automation lane for recording.

yeah so fx modulators can modulate fx parameters. so you might be able to build something adequate

Yeah so on the T-1 you can momentarily apply randomisation and can hold / loop it until you apply randomisation again. I’ve heard the functionality being compared to a Turing Machine module

Many thanks, cannot wait to experiment with this!

There is basically a Turing Machine clone in the FX section, called Register.

Ah fantastic. Can’t wait to try it!
