Help needed with external controller connected to Pyramid [update]

Hi,

First let me introduce myself before asking a question! :slight_smile:

I’m a hobby music making bloke and like to play around with hardware synths.
It’s a great way for me to reduce stress and to keep my mind in a creative state.
I’ve been checking out this forum from time to time and it looks like a nice place to be!

My choice of weapons:

Hardware:

  • Roland TR-8
  • Roland TB-3
  • Elektron Analog Four
  • Novation Circuit
  • Arturia Drumbrute
  • Allen&Heath ZED24 (mixer)
  • Squarp Pyramid !!!
  • Keystation 49e
  • Isla Instruments Kordbot

Software:

  • Computer running Reason

Now about my β€œproblem”:

I try to play my hardware through the keystation hooked up to the pyramid.
For some reason I cannot get it to work.
I’ve checked my settings, watched video’s of other people setting up their pyramid.

But no matter what I try, it doesn’t seem to work.

Also tried it with my Kordbot… same problem…

Playing the pads on the pyramid works fine and I can play all the gear.
But the keystation and pyramid are being ignored so it seems.

They way I connected my gear:

Keystation --> Pyramid Midi IN

Pyramid Midi OUT A --> TR-8 Midi IN
TR-8 Midi OUT --> Analog Four Midi IN
Analog Four Midi OUT --> TB-3 Midi IN
TB-3 Midi OUT --> Circuit Midi IN

  • Drumbrute is connected to Midi out B from the pyramid

The above setup works fine when only using the pyramid and everything works as it should.
But an external controller is ignored.
I’ve checked the manual and watched the YT video’s…

I’m scratching my head here about what I possibly are doing wrong. Or something I might mis…

Settings on Pyramid:

If some of you smart and great persons here on this forum would help me out by providing idea’s what I might be doing wrong I would really appreciate it.

ok, so midi out is working
(as pyramid can play it, and its no different with an external controller, with the assign note mode your using)

So, I suspect your β€˜issue’ is Omni mode - Id suggest for your initial testing you set this to OFF, keeps it simple, so you can confirm the hardware is working.

once thats done if you need multitrack mode then we can discuss why that might not be working a you expect )
Id also consider changing midi out/ Midi A mode to Midi Out (not thru) initially, as otherwise this’ll potentially β€˜confuse’ things

also Settings/Info, scroll down to midi in… see whats being received.
(I use this built in midi monitor all the time, it really helps explains whats going on… whats coming in, whats going out)

(also you might want to check Misc/Learn Notes, I use Midi in+Live)

I’ve switched the Omni mode to OFF like you said and also put MIDI A to β€˜OUT’.
Then I went to β€˜INFO’ in the settings menu (great suggestion!) and looked at what the keystation spit outs (Or what the Pyramid thinks it recieves)

This is were it gets stranges…
Before I posted this problem I wanted to make sure the keystation is function properly so I hooked it up to all the gear individual. Everything works great, mind you that I have to put the keystation on the right midi channel before the hardware spits out sounds! :slight_smile:
All the keys work. The pitchbend works. The modulation works.

But the Pyramid seems to recieve nothing when a key is pressed. Tried all the keys. Nothing.
But when I try to press some simple chords a lot of times fast then it recieves midi data but nothing that seems logic to me. Tried pitchbend and modulation: The same results. Some it recieves data but it seems it not the correct data.

Pitchbend:
Spits out data with the following structure:

##; OFF; NOTE; VOLUME# (e.g.: 01; OFF; C-1; 0)
##; PRESSURE # (10; PRESSURE; 0)

Modulation wheel:
Spits out data with the following structures:
##; PITCH#; ## (e.g.: 15; PITCH 32; 54)
##; PRESSURE# (e.g.: 08 PRESSURE 32)

Keys (pressing G major a lot of times in a row):
Spits out the following structure (And a lot of times not!)
##; PITCH#; ## (e.g.: 07 PITCH 0; 13)
##; PRESSURE# (e.g.: 16; PRESSURE 0)
##; OFF; NOTE; ## (e.g.: 01; OFF; C0#; 13)

So keys are sometimes recieved as a different note from what I played but only one value and often not the note I played in the chord.

When I monitor the MIDI OUT A is seems the pitchbend and modulation wheel data is send out but the keys I play dont. :frowning:

How to continue?

just to confirm this is all over MIDI DIN, connected directly to the pyramid…?!

so MIDI IN info is pretty much β€˜what it gets’ as long as you have omni set to off.
(if you explicitly set it to the wrong channel it will not show data on other channels)

honestly, if this is midi din, Id suspect either your controller is in some β€˜funny’ mode, or a dodgy cable.
(serial midi is simple stuff, not much to go wrong!)

what I would do (if you have the appropriate gear :frowning: ) is look at the midi data being sent from the controller on a mac/pc, and check its β€˜ok’

Im assuming you have tried the controller directly into your synths and they are working, but its really odd if the data seems corrupt on the pyramid… I think many of us use the pyramid with a midi controller/synth on the midi din in without issue… so why your controller should be different is β€˜baffling’ (and Im sure very frustrating!)

If you’re daisy chaining devices, you want to use β€˜Midi Thru’ not midi out… unless the machine in question doesn’t have a (physical) midi thru socket… in which case there will be an option in that machine’s options to select β€œmidi thru = on” to allow you to use the midi out socket as a midi thru

I am using my Pyramid as a kind of MIDI-hub for re-routing all incoming midi messages to the midi-channel, which is defined by the active track. My setting re-routes all incoming midi-channels to the track-midi-channel.

I am on pyraOS 2.994.

My setup of the midi-ins has one particular difference to yours: Omni-Mode = Multitrack-off

In my setup I can switch to play keys to change the pitches, if I have as you Assign note to = Keypad, or transpose tracks, if Assign note to = Master Transpose

To clearify things:

I have now tried multiple midi cables with the same strange effect on the pyramid.
About the daisy chaning… TR-8, TB-3 and Circuit have no dedicated MIDI out port. But you can set them up to work as a MIDI out port. That is what I did. I do this because I have no merger/splitter MIDI boxes.

And I’m still on PyraOS 2.3 which should work as I want it to be.

Also I have a Propellerhead Balance soundcard. This soundcard has no MIDI ports… :frowning:

So the only way to check the MIDI data on the PC is to run MIDI-OX and connect the keystation with a USB cable to the computer. All the data send to the MIDI-OX program seems to be correct!

So to summary:

  • Connecting my Keystation to individual synths: Works as it should.

  • Connecting my Pyramid to the daisy chained synths: Works as it should.

  • Connecting my Keystation to Pyramid: Just some random stuf that the Pyramid picks up (so it seems).

To buy a new controller just to test if that works like it should seems a bit wierd. Cause… Why would it play nice with all gear except the Pyramid? (Althoug… that Arturia keystep looks nice! :smile: )

Any ideas as how I can test the Pyramid any further?

How about testing the midi-in more in depth. Try to record some notes and chords using the keystation or an other midi-keyboard.

If it’s possible to play a synth with your keybaord, the Pyramid should record those keystrokes too. I would connect:

  • keyboard midi-out --> synth midi-in
  • synth - midi-through --> Pyramid midi-in (which shall record the notes etc.)

Then check the recording. Maybe there is something hinting at an issue (systematically).

Midi-hardware is known to be very reliable. Maybe it’s a software issue only. Have you ever considered to re-install the firmware?

… also double check that the output channel on your keystation matches the channel you’re trying to trigger ?

Unfortunately it doesn’t work on my Pyramid. Tried it with a couple of different setting. But there is just no MIDI coming in.
And I made sure my keystation sends the MIDI on the right channel.

I don’t have an other MIDI keyboard to try. But MIDI from the other synths are also not noticed. And, yes, I checked the settings on those synths. I starting to believe my unit has a faulty MIDI in connector. :cry:

The only MIDI data I can recieve is from my keystations Modulation wheel. And it doesn’t look good.
And yes! The Modulation wheel!

Only thing I haven’t checked yet is the reinstall of the PyraOS.

Just an update to let you know that my problem is solved! (kinda…)
I bought a keystep and connected it to the MIDI IN port of the Pyramid.
Selected the MIDI IN screen under the INFO page in the General settings and I see all the correct MIDI data comming in! :smile:

But I haven’t found out why my keystation wont work with the pyramid.
That’s still bugging me a little.

Now it’s time for music making!!!
